The Buller River is New Zealand's largest un-dammed river. It is regarded as the Mecca of river kayaking with a number of world class white water runs, it is also the catchment of many magnificent tributaries, the main ones being Mangles, Matiri, Matakitaki and Maruia. The Gowen, Owen, Deepdale, Ohikanui and Orikaka Rivers all adding water to the Lower Gorge - the scene of the BULLER GORGE DESCENT.
The race is a Grade 2 large volume river, most of the rapids are in the upper section of the race so for beginner Grade 2 river paddlers the 30km option is a progression to the 60km option. Safety kayakers and jet boats will be monitoring the paddlers in sections.

The scenery in the Gorge is gob-smacking!
In a single or double kayak, you'll love it.

All kayaks must have;
- flotation inside kayak - enough that it will float with water in it
- spray decks, helmets and life jackets must be worn.
- basic repair kit / basic first aid kit
- dry bag with warm top, hat and wind jacket (regardless of what your wearing at start)

GRADE 2 CERTIFICATES are not required but all participants must be at or above the grade 2 level. Event staff can withdraw people from the event if they believe the person is not at the Grade 2 level.
